Objectives of geo rain water board (GRWB)

N.J. Devaraja Reddy an Hydrogeologist by profession and also a chief consultant besides an advisor for the Chitradurga based NGO, Geo Rain Water Board (GRWB). He has deeply involved in water conservation projects of all types for the last over three decades after obtaining his M.Sc Geology from the University of Mysore with 6th rank during 1987.  It is his ambition to be more active by involving in the awareness creating mass camps for the public and also students of various schools and colleges in the state, considering the water resource as the most important element of the life.

He has done intensive hydrogeological and geophysical surveys across the state to identify the ‘aquifers’ (water bearing geological formations) and given drilling points for more than 20,000 bore wells and achieved an high accuracy rate of success. As the ground water is an integral part of the Hydrological cycle, it is wise to protect it by various modes including rainwater harvesting and ground water recharging methods. Thus, the hydro geological environment could be protected well in the interest of the wellbeing of prevailing lives on the earth. Therefore, Reddy has started more concentration in the field of rain water harvesting along with bore well recharging techniques too during these days. In this direction, he has been interacting as a rain water harvesting specialist with the aim of bore well recharging and ground water rejuvenation and water conservation as a whole. Thus, it is possible to make groundwater as a standing perennial source of water for the farmers, he observed.

Technical Expertise Available with GRWB and Projects Undertaken

GRWB is providing training to the youth in the field of conserving the water and environment related issues. The board is equipped with sophisticated geophysical instruments such as IGIS a modern equipment, GPS handset, Water testing unit etc. Bore well recharge technology is done more scientifically using specific filters of Aqua mesh, Nylon mesh filters, Sand filters and HDPE Net materials, which are cost effective in nature. Reddy has under taken various projects including ‘Roof top rain water harvesting (RTRWH), Water storage using Geo membrane Technology, by constructing sub-surface Dykes with file foundation, model schools concept, Open well recharge’.

Devaraja Reddy has done lot of interactive sessions with the students, researchers, academicians, technologists of various organizations including the Universities, KSCST (Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology), CGWB (Central Ground Water Board), KSPCB (Karnataka State Pollution Control Board), Essar laboratory, Arghyam Trust, Rattan Tata Foundation and various branches of Pragati Grameena Banks.

Devaraja Reddy has delivered lectures and demonstrations on RWH at the state I.A.S Officers, CEO’s of the State development departments, legislatures representatives like MLA’s and MLC’s, education department, organized by Karnataka government, including Rural development panchayat raj (R.D.P.R) department for its prestigious (80 corers projects) such as Suvrana jala – School Roof top rain water harvesting projects.

Besides, he has also delivered special lecture programs during many spiritual, religious conferences including the national festivals and also at several social functions like, marriage functions, Birthday functions.

Thus, Devaraja Reddy has propagated his ideas of water conservation through social media, you tube, face book, what’s app, twitter, so as to help the larger mass of the GRWB technology transformation.

Books, Literature publications and Achievements

Devaraja Reddy has written two books in Kannada published by M/s Navakarnataka Publication. Besides, a documentary film has been made by the department of Information & Broadcasting, Karnataka, His interviews have been telecasted in National Channels and Private channels besides AIR and FM Channels for several times. A series of these programs relating to this technology co-sponsored by water shed department and Arghyam, Bangalore were also held at several places.

Besides, Devaraja Reddy’s awareness programs had been included in website i.e India water portal. org. Many of the Devaraja Reddy’s articles on water conservation techniques had been published in all leading Kannada, English dailies and other periodical magazines too.

Thus, he has not only acquired more knowledge and skills of water resources conservation, management, besides he too shared his treasure of knowledge and skills to a larger mass.

* Hiremata Gurukula School in Bhalki of Bidar district has become an eco-friendly one after adopting Devaraja Reddy’s innovative technology and the results are fairly good.

* Malleshappa, a farmer from Hunasekatte in Davanagere taluk has bagged with a Krishi Pandith award during 2009 by the government of Karnataka as he was adopted Devaraja Reddy’s innovative technology for his best water management practice, Devaraja Reddy claims.

By involving with the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat (ZP), Reddy has worked for, MGNREGA projects and bagged the National award for having achieved good progress in the water conservation. Thus, it has been recognized that Chitradurga as one of the best model districts in bore well recharging in the state.

Technology Adopted and Developed for Achieving Good Results

Devaraja Reddy has developed a typical design of bore well recharge structure, adoptable to different ‘Hydro-geological’ and Geo-morphological settings’ by studying the soil strata and condition of bore well and so far, he has developed more than 20 types of recharge structures. Fixing the bracket to casing pipe, concreting, making holes to bore well casing pipe, fixing the sand filters to the perforated area, Filling boulders, different size jelly, charcoal for absorbing the odor, spreading the HDPE net, coarse sand, around the infiltration tank, besides constructing a strong parapet wall, lead off drain for rain water inflow, silt arrester. Thus, he always gave importance on cost effective and eco-friendly phenomena while designing and executing the work.

Advantages of Reddy Techniques

Man power has been used to maximum extent with zero maintenance cost for several years. It minimizes the damages caused by storm water and soil erosion.

This technology softens the hardness of the bore well water source i.e., quality water. This technology can be easily maintainable by a lay man. Thousands of old bore wells which have been getting recharged, using this technique are working satisfactorily since two decades and hopefully for another 10 to 15 years. This has been proved practically in the field, Reddy observed.

Awareness Program Dissemination Technology

Programmes organized by Pragati Grameena Bank in their various branches.

We written two books telugu & Kannada published by famous Navakarnataka Publication.

A Documentary Film has been made by Dept. of Information & Broadcasting Karnataka, using my new technology of bore well recharge.

In 2002 I made the first ever in Kannada a Documentary on our innovative techniques of bore well recharging

We organized and participated quite a number of villages and school with the sponsorship of Danida project and Arghyam Bangalore awareness and Model Demonstrations

We participated in Awareness programmes held for state I.A.S Officers, CEO’s of the State development departments, legislatures representative of G.P to MLA’s and MLC’s Stake holders of Education department, organized by Karnataka GOK R.D.P.R Department for its prestigious (80 crores projects). Suvrana jala – School Roof top rain water harvesting projects.

Interviews have been telecasted in National Channels and Private channels and broad casting AIR and FM Channels so many times.

Series of this programme relating to this technology co-sponsored by water shed department and Arghyam Bangalore.

Which was aired through Akashawani. Personal interviews conducted in debates and private channels; Awareness program had been included in website i.e India water portal. org.

Articles had been published in all leading Kannada, English daily, periodical magazines.

We are proud to mention here that an interesting and peculiar type of Awareness programs

In several social functions like, marriage functions, Birthday functions and others such social formal and informal gatherings by arranging lectures with demonstrations with visual illustrations.

In many spiritual, religious conferences national festivals. We had been invited and given lectures on rain water and recharging.

Especially social media, you tube, face book, what’s app, twitter helps a lot for our organization to technology transformation.

For research purpose of the project it is suggested to have 10 -12 acres of land, this makes NJ Devarajareddy to work and fulfill his research activities & Demonstrations to the great extent.

Chitrdurga is in middle of Karnataka easily which makes the people to approach this district headquarter.
